This handsome 19th-century elm sideboard was originally part of a farmhouse grain store from the border region between Shanxi Province and Mongolia, China. Robust and understated in form, it reflects the practical furniture traditions of northern China, where storage pieces were built to endure hard daily use and extreme climates. The original carcass remains intact, while the front has been sympathetically adapted from its original top-opening format to create a more functional cabinet with opening doors.

The surface displays a beautifully worn, darkened patina developed over decades of use, with subtle tonal variations that speak to its agricultural past. Its simple, architectural lines give it a quiet presence that allows it to sit comfortably in both contemporary interiors and more traditional settings.

The interior is arranged with removable shelving behind three doors, offering generous and practical storage for dining, living, or hallway use.
