Black Lacquer Coffer Table From Shanxi Province - 19th Century

This elegant antique Chinese coffer table, dating to the 19th century, comes from the Shanxi province and exemplifies the timeless craftsmanship of Qing dynasty furniture. Made from solid northern elm wood (榆木 yumu), it has acquired a rich, dark patina through over 150 years of use. The clean, rectangular form and simple yet refined detailing make this a striking yet understated piece - ideal for both traditional and modern interiors.

Coffer tables were used mostly for storage of clothes and utensils. They were a utility piece and has an original locking iron hasp which would have kept items inside safe. Coffer tables were often presented as part of a dowry for a newly married couple in Shanxi province.
