Chinese Apothecary Chest From Shanxi Province - 19th Century

Chinese traditional medicine was stored in this fabulous antique apothecary chest. This piece dates to the 19th century and is from Shanxi province in Northern China. It has layers of character and patina from many years of daily use. The lacquer has a beautiful natural crackle only found on older pieces.

The labels have been replaced many times through the years with each layered on top of the previous. Each label details the various natural minerals and herbs that were mixed by the practitioner for each patient.

36 small drawers make up the bulk of the cabinet, below those are two larger drawers that complete the storage space.
