Tianjin sideboards come from the port city of Tianjin & surrounding areas in North China. The simple design originated during the Ming dynasty. Our pieces are mostly 19th century & early 20th century They were usually made from elm or oak, but sometimes from more expensive woods such as catalpa and occasionally in camphorwood. The fittings are made from brass and are mostly circular in form, but occasionally rectangular. These cabinets were used for storage of clothes or bedding and also as altar cabinets for family ancestor worship. We only buy pieces which have the original brass fittings. 19thC from China.
