Camphor Chest From Shanghai ca. 1920

Camphor chests were usually made in pairs - one each for husband & wife. They were used to store clothing. The simple design is pure Ming in style. Camphor wood is moth & insect repellent and protects silk from damage. The fittings are made from brass and are original unless otherwise stated. They date from the 19th century to the early 20th century
