This antique Chinese Gansu cabinet is incredibly unusual as these cabinets are rarely lacquered. Usually, cabinets from Gansu are made from walnut, elm, or mulberry wood and the wood is left visible and unlacquered. This piece is constructed from walnut wood.

The red lacquer with gilt work is far more common in the south neighboring Shanxi province. The gilt scenes depict people living their day to day lives giving a real insight into the past. Some of the gilt work has worn away with age and this cabinet developed a fantastic patina. Scenes of bamboo are painted on the sides of the cabinet which is very unusual for Chinese furniture.  

This Gansu cabinet dates to the middle 19^th century and has its original brass hardware. The folding doors have been customised by a previous owner to open outwards to reveal a large interior space with a single shelf. Perfect for a TV cabinet. Below the main compartment are three drawers.
