    'Clear Weather After Snow At Massaki' Woodblock by Hiroshige

    This old Japanese woodblock print is entitled 'Clear Weather after Snow at Massaki (Massaki yukibare no zu)' and is by woodblock print artist Ando Hiroshige (1797-1858) and is from the series entitled 'Famous Places in the Eastern Capital' (Tôto meisho).
    The original publisher was Kikakudo between 1832 - 1839, Tenpo era (1830 - 1844). Later publications have a black seal in the margin (instead of red), the seal of Sanoki.

    The scene depicts boatmen navigating the river past a temple. The heavy use of blue shows how popular Prussian Blue (ferric-ferrocyanide) had become after it became readily available in the early 1820's.

    This woodblock print can be seen in many museums including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Honolulu Museum of Art & The British Museum
