These chairs were also known as Book Chairs and were used by scholars of art or calligraphy. They are usually made from elm or red elm, but walnut is also found in North China They were made in pairs and it is very rare to find larger sets. Book chairs were usually placed each side of a table. Both Ming and Qing furniture had a strong influence on English furniture, notably through Chippendale in the 18th century. Our pieces are mostly from the 19th century. This one has very nice patination.
