These glass lamps are known in India as Handis or Hundis named after a cooking pot. Originally they were made in Europe and exported to India as lighting for large homes and palaces in the 19th century. Candles or oil lamps were placed inside the glass bell and the glass lid prevented soot from marking the ceiling. Many survived on the tall ceilings unlike their European counterparts which were taken down and smashed when electricity arrived.
This one is made in India. Please note that the glass may have small imperfections and is a good copy an old handi.
