Japanese Woodblock Print

J259

A wonderful diptych of Princess Yaegaki, who was intent on saving her lover, the handsome Katsuyori by delivering a magical helmet before he was to go into battle. However after leaving her father's castle she came upon a huge lake that she couldn't cross, in her quest to reach Katsuyori. She prayed to the god of the suwa shrine who sent a white fox to protect her. In this print the Princess is holding the horned helmet, decorated with flowing white hair, as she prepares to follow the magical fox fires safely across the frozen lake. Two samurai stand by her side. Incredible illustration from this famous story with fine embossed detail and subtle touches of mica on the Princess's floral hair ornament. 19thC Japanese School. Purchased in old black frame that may have some minor imperfections.
