Japanese Diptych Woodblock Print - 19thC - UNFRAMED

J258

This print shows actors in many Kabuki roles. At lower left the lead character in the dramatic play Shinaraku poses with a mirror in his outstretched hand, his long coloured pants trailing on the ground beside him. Above him at upper left Ebisu one of the seven lucky gods, holding a red snapper over his shoulders. The famous Soga brothers appear at right, wearing their trademark Kimono, patterned with butterflies and birds. Above them an exotically dressed Chinese warrior floats on a swirling grey cloud. A lively image with fascinating detail and attractive figures. A great print for a Kabuki enthusiast. Purchased in old black frame that may have some minor imperfections.
