Often described in the West as a “wedding cabinet”, examples of this type were more accurately conceived as scholar’s cabinets, used for the storage of books, scrolls, and treasured objects within an educated household. The deep black surface, created from natural lacquer derived from the Rhus verniciflua tree, has matured into a softly burnished patina through generations of use.

The painted panels are arranged in the manner of a bogutu, or “Hundred Antiques” composition, depicting an assemblage of scholar’s objects and auspicious emblems. Butterflies and floral sprays to the lower panel further suggest joy and harmonious union. Together, these elements form a visual language celebrating scholarship, prosperity, and cultivated virtue central to Qing dynasty domestic culture.

The interior reveals a practical and thoughtfully arranged storage configuration with a recessed central compartment, two shelves, and a pair of fitted drawers to the upper section. This style of Japanese tansu is from the Kanto region and may well be from the city of Edo. Japanese tastes consider this style of tansu as refined and this style is often referred to as iki (chic).

This chest is made from kiri (paulownia wood). Sumptuary law restricted chonin (townspeople) to owning unlacquered chests such as this one. A kasane dansu refers to a stacking chest, designed in two parts for ease of transport and storage, while an isho tansu was used specifically for storing clothing. Families often kept separate chests for summer and winter garments, and the iron carrying handles allowed them to be moved to outbuildings when not in seasonal use. The lock plate is shaped in an eyo-kurigata motif.

Crafted in the traditional way, this tansu would have been the collaborative work of three specialists: a carpenter, a lacquer worker, and an ironworker. Constructed from chestnut wood with a plywood back, it features four large drawers and two smaller drawers hidden behind a side door. The chest is finished with elaborate black iron hardware, contrasting beautifully with the rich natural lacquer of the wood. A practical yet elegant example of Japanese design, it retains its historic character while offering modern functionality for storage.

Origin: Possibly Nihonmatsu, Japan

Date: Taisho period (1912€“1925)

Materials: Mixed woods with lacquer finish and iron fittings

Features: Two-part stacking chest, four large drawers, two smaller drawers behind a side door, decorative black iron hardware

Condition: Wear consistent with age; iron fittings and lacquer with aged character

Dimensions: W112 x D45 x H103 cm

Japanese travelling chest -Dansu with original iron fittings.
The upper section with an arrangement of 2 long and 2 small drawers.
The lower section with two long drawers, 1 small drawer and a locking door with 2 small drawers inside.
The drawer fronts are made from Zelkova wood - Red Elm & the carcass in Cryptomeria.
From Japan
117 x 56.5 x 102 cms (wxdxh)

UK Delivery Charge - except Highlands & Islands £80
More delivery options available on checkout

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0217/2522/products/chest-of-drawers-japanese-dansu-chest-of-drawers-late-19thc-1_f7da5c23-f4eb-4b3c-aacb-dd4c188cf70b.jpg?v=1604203298
m272
Japanese Choba Dansu - late 19thC

Choba Dansu - Meiji Period - Late 19th C
Made from Zelkova & Cryptomeria wood.
Two sliding doors and six drawers.
